Word for word, this is the welcome card handed to every guest who sits down with us — the same one we hand to a first-timer at a senior center as to a cousin who's never played.

How A Session Actually Runs
No assumed vocabulary. If a term comes up that you haven't heard before, we stop and explain it before we use it again.
We roll the dice together to decide who sits East first — the dealer's seat for that round. Nobody needs to know what East means yet; we explain it as we go.
The tiles get built into a square wall, then broken open at one point to start the deal. We walk through why, not just how — the reasoning behind a rule is what makes it stick.
Everyone gets their starting tiles, sorted and explained one group at a time. We check in before moving on — a session only moves as fast as its slowest-to-settle player.
We play real hands from the very first round, narrating each choice out loud, so the rules attach to something you actually did rather than something you were told.
Why This Exists
Welcome to the Table started as materials written for my own extended family — many of them without a lot of formal schooling behind them, all of them completely capable of learning this game if nobody talked down to them or buried it in terminology.
That same plain-language approach is now what we bring to senior centers and community groups: no assumption that "you'll pick it up," no rush past the parts that feel unfamiliar, and no version of the rules that only makes sense if you already know them.
It's also, quietly, good for you. Learning something new later in life — new patterns, new memory, new focus — is exactly the kind of mental exercise mahjong has offered players for generations.
"You are always welcome here" isn't a line on a card. It's the actual standard we hold every session to — and the reason we'd rather teach the same hand five times than let one person quietly fall behind.
